By Mr Khorrum K., CV21 26th September 2016 When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything. This is why it is important that you protect yourself now. Click on this link for more info from the HSE. http://ow.ly/eeXs306AyfA

Ian is friendly and approachable. Did a swift and very very tidy job." "Excellent very detailed and true to the quote given." What is asbestos? Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals used in certain products, such as building materials and vehicle brakes, to resist heat and corrosion. Asbestos includes chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, and any of these materials that have been chemically treated and/or altered. What are the dangers? The inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause serious diseases of the lungs and other organs that may not appear until years after the exposure has occurred. For instance, asbestosis can cause a build-up of scar-like tissue in the lungs and result in loss of lung function that often progresses to disability and death. There are four main diseases caused by asbestos: mesothelioma (which is always fatal), lung cancer (almost always fatal), asbestosis (not always fatal, but it can be very debilitating) and diffuse pleural thickening (not fatal). According to the UK Health and Safety Executive, abestos-related conditions are responsible for about 4,000 deaths a year. Where can you find it? Asbestos was extensively used as a building material in the UK from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. It was used for a variety of purposes and was ideal for fireproofing and insulation. Any building built before 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc) can contain asbestos. Asbestos materials in good condition are safe unless asbestos fibres become airborne, which happens when materials are damaged. How does exposure usually occur? Asbestos fibres are present in the UK environment, so everyone is exposed to very low levels of fibres. However, a key factor in the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease is the total number of fibres breathed in. Working on or near damaged asbestos-containing materials or breathing in high levels of asbestos fibres, which may be many hundreds of times that of environmental levels could increase your chances of getting an asbestos-related disease. Asbestos and the law? Because of the risks of working with asbestos, there are a number of sets of regulations which place requirements on 'dutyholders’ – employers and the self-employed. These cover working with all types of asbestos-containing material. A quick summary of these regulations can be found in the asbestos regulations section of the HSE website. Source: HSE, OSHA The HSE provides this helpful info: Workers involved in refurbishment, maintenance and other similar trades, could be at risk of exposure to asbestos during their work. This includes:
Don’t assume there will always be warning signs. Asbestos isn’t always obvious. There could be undiscovered asbestos in buildings you work on. Would you spot an asbestos gasket on an old engine, asbestos cement pipes or an asbestos containing fuse-board? If you’re not sure, the premises owner needs to get it checked out! Only carry out work if you are properly trained and have the right equipment. Remember, Asbestos fibres can cause lung cancer and lung diseases. Check it out before you start work! |
